Written and Oral Communication Skills
|
Objective One
|
Demonstrate effective communication skills appropriate for topic, audience and occasion.
Rationale: Effective communication is possibly at its most important during a job interview.
First impressions, excellent communication skills and a flair for the position at hand are all very
much necessary to secure the perfect job. Usually a potential employer sees your resume, or curriculum
vitae (c.v.), before he or she sees you and so it must convey what an excellent candidate you are. With this in
mind I am attaching my most recently updated c.v. with the belief that it exemplifies my "effective communication skills".

Objective Two
|
Write coherent, well-supported and carefully edited essays
and reports suitable for a range of different audiences and purposes.
Rationale: Most of the writing I do is in an academic setting and is meant to inform or persuade,
usually for a grade. That doesn't leave a whole lot of room for freewheeling creativity, which is why I
enjoy writing entertainment stories for The Tiger, Clemson's student newspaper, so much. To show
my ability to write for "diverse audiences and purposes" I am linking a feature article entitled
"The 10 Commandments of Parking Services". It is meant solely to entertain and is aimed at a wide audience
(the entire University).

Objective Three
|
Employ the full range of the writing process, from rough draft to edited product.
Rationale: English is my double major, and in my Critical Writing about Literature class (ENGL 310)
we spent a lot of time studying literary theory and applying it to the fictional works we read. One of our
assignments was to apply Pierre Machery's theory of "Literary Production" to Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway.
Such an assignment requires a lot of research and thought and so a lot of prewriting. My rough draft took shape out
of my outline, as shown in this competency. The outline-cum-rough-draft is at the end of the document.

Objective Four
|
Incorporate both print and electronic resources into speeches, presentations and written documents.
Rationale: For my communications class (COMM 150) we were required to work in groups and
develop presentations revolving around randomly picked countries. The idea was to produce a presentation
and handout on a topic with which everyone in the group was unfamiliar. My group was given Honduras, and
we produced a presentation to overview the country and a brochure to convince foreign investors of
Honduras' viability. Not really an easy task! The combination shows my proficiency with "speeches,
presentations and written documents".
Due to compatibility concerns, both documents are saved as sets of image files in the directory
linked below.
