Explore the causes and consequences of human actions.
Rationale: During my first semester at Clemson I took a colloquium in philosophy and
political theory through the National Scholars Program. We focused some of our studies on
John Stuart Mill (of personal liberty fame) and on Niccolo Machiavelli (who needs no
introduction). Both men analyzed human actions, varying between utilitarianism and tyranny, and
I found their thoughts on why people do what they do very enlightening. In my final essays for the
class I elaborated on why I find Mill's theories appealing and Machiavelli's repulsive.
