Cross-Cultural Awareness

Objective One
Develop an understanding of world cultures in historical and contemporary perspectives.

Rationale: This is my final paper for a course, English Folklore, I took at the University of Sussex over the summer of 2008. This shows my understanding of world cultures (namely, that of England) in both history and the modern day. My paper goes into detail on how death omens pervade folklore, how they likely were formed and how they still surface in modern culture.

Objective Two
Recognize the importance of language in cultural contexts.

Rationale: I am completing a minor in the Spanish language, so I am very attuned to how important language is to culture. One of my recent assignments for SPAN 305, Intermediate Conversation and Composition, was to interview a native Spanish-speaker who immigrated to the United States about their memories of their homeland, what surprised them about coming here, what they prefer about both environments and so on. I chose to interview a childhood friend who grew up in Argentina, and his insight into the American/Hispanic culture differences was very eye-opening. (The composition is in Spanish.)
